Overview

Bacteriostatic water for injection is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol slows the growth of common bacteria that may be introduced when a needle enters the vial stopper.

It is packaged in multi-dose vials specifically for reconstituting or diluting materials that will be accessed more than once.

Why it matters

Reconstituted peptide solutions in research use are usually accessed multiple times. Bacteriostatic water reduces (but does not eliminate) the microbial risk associated with repeat access.

Key concepts

  • Bacteriostatic, not bactericidal

    Benzyl alcohol slows bacterial growth; it does not sterilise the solution. Contamination is still possible, and the preservative does not neutralise endotoxin.

  • Contraindications exist

    Benzyl alcohol is contraindicated in neonates and in specific other contexts; large doses have been associated with toxicity. This is not a research-vial-specific consideration but is worth knowing.

  • In-use limits

    Bacteriostatic water is typically labelled with an in-use limit (often 28 days after first puncture). This limit applies to the diluent vial itself, independent of the reconstituted peptide solution's own stability window.

Common misconceptions

  • "Bacteriostatic water is safer than sterile water." Neither is safer per se; each is appropriate for different use patterns.
  • "The preservative sterilises the peptide solution." It does not.
  • "Any water labelled 'for injection' is bacteriostatic." No — sterile water for injection is a distinct product with no preservative.

Practical interpretation

Use bacteriostatic water when the compound page or the practitioner reference describes a repeated-access reconstitution. Use the volume the source specifies; do not reduce the diluent volume to concentrate the solution without understanding the downstream calculation shift.
