Why single-use vials exist, what "discard after opening" actually means, and where the design decision comes from.

Overview
A single-use vial contains one intended use worth of material and no preservative. It is intended to be opened, drawn from once, and the unused portion discarded.
The design assumption is that no needle re-enters the vial after the first draw. Any repeat access voids the sterility assurance and defeats the purpose of the format.
Why it matters
Reusing a single-use vial to save cost is one of the most common preventable causes of contamination in outpatient practice. The single-use format is the answer to a specific microbiology problem.
Key concepts
No preservative
Single-use vials contain no benzyl alcohol or equivalent antimicrobial preservative. Microbial growth is prevented only by the intended one-use pattern.
Discard after use
"Discard after opening" is a specification, not a suggestion. Once a needle has entered a single-use vial, the vial's sterility can no longer be assumed.
Volume matches use
Single-use vials are sized to the intended use volume. "Only a little left" after the intended draw is expected and is not evidence that another use is safe.
Common misconceptions
- "Refrigerating a used single-use vial makes it safe for a second use." It does not; refrigeration slows growth but does not restore sterility.
- "If the residual volume is enough for another dose, another dose is fine." No; the format's sterility assurance is single-use.
- "Single-use vials are wasteful and can be treated like multi-dose vials." The waste is a design consequence of the microbiology; it is not an inefficiency to work around.
Practical interpretation
If a compound page or practitioner reference specifies a single-use vial, use it once and discard. If the material naturally supports a multi-dose pattern with an appropriate preservative, that pattern is documented separately.
Limitations
Single-use is a specification of the product as sold. It is not a specification of how a reconstituted peptide solution should be used; that is compound-specific.
