What are peptides?

Overview
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Chains of roughly 2 to about 50 amino acids are usually called peptides; longer chains are usually called proteins. The line is a convention rather than a hard chemical boundary.
Peptides sit between small-molecule drugs (typically under about 500 daltons) and full proteins (thousands of daltons). That intermediate size gives them a distinctive pharmacology: they can bind receptors with high specificity like a protein, but they are usually too fragile to survive the stomach and too large to cross membranes freely like a small molecule.
Why it matters
Everything on Healthy Mango is a peptide or a peptide-adjacent research compound. How a molecule is sized, folded, and stabilised drives how it must be stored, how it must be administered, and how it behaves once it is in the body. Reading a compound page without a working definition of "peptide" makes the mechanistic sections harder than they need to be.
Key concepts
Amino-acid sequence
Every peptide is defined by its sequence — the ordered list of amino acids it contains. Two molecules with the same sequence are the same peptide; a single residue substitution can be a different molecule entirely.
Endogenous vs. synthetic
Some peptides described on the site (for example melanocyte-stimulating hormones, growth-hormone-releasing hormones) exist naturally in the human body. Others are engineered analogues designed to be more stable, more selective, or longer-acting than the endogenous parent.
Route dependence
Peptides are typically inactivated by digestive enzymes. That is why almost every compound page describes an injected or nasal formulation rather than an oral tablet.
Common misconceptions
- "Peptide" is not a synonym for "hormone." Some peptides are hormones; many are not.
- "Peptide" is not a synonym for "natural" or "safe." Synthetic peptides are the norm in this field, and safety is a property of a specific molecule at a specific dose, not of the class.
- A peptide is not the same as its receptor. Receptor names (GLP-1, ghrelin, oxytocin) describe binding sites; multiple different peptides may act on the same receptor with different affinities.
Practical interpretation
When you open a compound page, the sequence and molecular class explain most of the downstream story: the route, the storage window, the injection-site guidance, and the safety cautions all descend from what kind of molecule the peptide actually is.
Limitations
