Storage before reconstitution
How to hold a lyophilized vial between arrival and use, and what storage abuse looks like.

Overview
Lyophilized vials are more forgiving than solutions, but they are not indestructible. Standard storage for most peptide vials is refrigerated (2–8°C) or frozen (−20°C or below), depending on the compound and the manufacturer's recommendation.
The intent of pre-reconstitution storage is to keep the material within its shelf-life specification: identity, purity, potency, water content, and, where applicable, sterility.
Why it matters
Storage abuse (excursions to room temperature, exposure to light, repeated freeze–thaw) can degrade the peptide silently, changing its potency without visibly changing the vial.

Follow the compound page
Storage guidance is compound-specific and is documented on each compound page. Do not extrapolate one compound's condition to another.
Excursions matter cumulatively
Short excursions to warmer temperature are typically tolerated; long or repeated excursions are not. Manufacturers document allowable excursion time in the CoA or product insert.
Light and moisture
Some peptides degrade on light exposure or from atmospheric moisture. Storage in the original sealed vial in a dark container is a conservative default.
Common misconceptions
- "Freezer storage is always safer." Some peptides tolerate freezing poorly; the compound page is the authority.
- "A visibly intact cake proves the vial is unaffected." Chemical degradation is often invisible.
- "Room temperature for a few hours cannot matter." It usually does not, but repeated excursions add up.
Practical interpretation
When a shipment arrives, note the manufacturer's condition and transfer the vials to the storage condition documented on the compound page as soon as reasonably possible.
Limitations
Storage guidance describes best-practice conditions. It does not guarantee the vial's contents; potency loss over time is a real risk that no storage discipline entirely eliminates.
