Why every meaningful CoA is tied to a specific batch, and why trust in a supplier's earlier batches is not evidence for a later one.

Overview
Peptide manufacturing is organised by batch: a defined quantity of material produced under a defined process, given a lot number, and tested as a unit. Analytical results — identity, purity, potency, sterility, endotoxin — are properties of a batch, not of a peptide in the abstract.
Every meaningful CoA carries a lot number that ties the analytical results to that batch. Two batches of the same peptide from the same manufacturer can produce different CoA numbers because they were made from different starting material, on different days, by different operators.
Why it matters
Trust in a supplier's earlier batches is not evidence for a later batch. Verification is per batch. If your vial's lot number does not appear on any CoA the supplier has published, you have no batch-specific evidence for that vial.
Key concepts
Lot number as anchor
The lot number ties every downstream test back to the material in the vial. Without a matching lot number, a CoA is a general-quality-narrative document, not evidence for the specific vial.
Independent third-party per batch
Where independent third-party testing exists, it should be run on the same batch as the vial. A third-party CoA for a different batch is evidence about a different batch.
Retest date
Some CoAs include a retest date after which the assumption of continued specification may no longer hold. This is common for stability-sensitive materials.
Common misconceptions
- "This supplier has always had good CoAs" is not evidence about the current batch.
- "The peptide is the same" is not evidence about the current batch. The peptide can be the same and the manufacturing outcome different.
- "They test every batch" is a supplier claim that itself needs verification via a batch-matched CoA.
Practical interpretation
Match your vial's lot number to a CoA. Where you cannot, treat the batch as untested by the specific tests that would matter to you.
Limitations
Batch structure and lot-number practice vary across manufacturers. A well-run supply chain makes lot matching straightforward; a poorly-run one obscures it.
