Why are peptides lyophilized?

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) removes water, which is what makes peptides degrade over time. Dry peptide can be stored for years; the same peptide in solution may only be stable for weeks.

Lyophilization — freeze-drying — is the standard supply format for most research-grade peptides because it dramatically extends shelf life. Hydrolytic degradation of the peptide backbone requires water; without water, the reaction essentially stops. A lyophilized vial stored at refrigerator temperature can retain full activity for years, whereas the same peptide reconstituted in aqueous solution typically requires refrigeration and has a shelf life measured in weeks to a couple of months.

The trade-off is that the vial must be reconstituted before use, which introduces the possibility of user error (wrong diluent, wrong volume, contaminated technique) and requires the reader to understand basic aseptic technique. For approved commercial peptide products (semaglutide, tirzepatide in Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro/Zepbound pens; thymosin alpha-1 in Zadaxin), the manufacturer has controlled the cold-chain distribution and stability characterisation well enough to ship the product as a pre-formulated liquid — the reconstitution error risk is eliminated because there is no reconstitution.

For research-supply peptides that ship globally through varying storage conditions, lyophilized supply gives the highest confidence that the peptide arriving at the end user retains the potency printed on the label.
