Emergency warning signs
The categories of symptom that call for immediate professional or emergency help, and how to lower the threshold for seeking it.

Overview
Some symptoms are urgent regardless of what preceded them. Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, fainting, severe confusion, seizure, signs of stroke, severe or persistent vomiting, severe dehydration, severe abdominal pain, rapidly worsening symptoms, or suspected overdose all call for immediate professional or emergency help.
This is the same list that appears at the top of the Safety Center, and for the same reason: the goal is to lower the threshold for seeking help, not to raise it.
Why it matters
Serious symptoms rarely wait for a phone consultation to become severe. Under-reaction to an urgent symptom is a preventable cause of harm; over-reaction is not.
Key concepts
Symptom pattern beats attribution
Whether a symptom is caused by a compound, a coincidence, or an unrelated condition matters much less in the moment than whether it is dangerous. Treat urgent symptoms as urgent first; attribute later.
Poison Control (US)
US readers can reach Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (24 hours, free, confidential). This is appropriate for suspected overdoses, accidental exposures, wrong-substance ingestion, and any suspected poisoning.
Local emergency services
For life-threatening emergencies of any kind, dial the local emergency number and follow the operator's instructions. Do not use Healthy Mango contact addresses for emergencies.
Common misconceptions
- "It might pass." A severe symptom might pass; it might not. The cost of a false alarm is much lower than the cost of a missed emergency.
- "They will laugh at me." Emergency clinicians would rather triage a false alarm than miss a real event.
- "I'll wait and see." Waiting is appropriate for mild, stable symptoms; it is inappropriate for severe or worsening ones.
Practical interpretation
If a symptom appears on the emergency list, act on it. Nothing else on the site is important enough to compete with a serious symptom in front of you.
Limitations
The emergency list is not exhaustive. Any symptom that feels alarming, whether or not it appears on the list, deserves professional evaluation.
